“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” Which single step will you take today?

In Leadership by paul

So at the beginning of this month we talked about New Year resolutions and why they don’t work, in this article we will begin to look at some of the generic skills you can work on to develop your leadership and how to make sure they really will work!

Of course Self-Discipline is one of the 10 Emotional Capital behaviours and we will be needing this in bagful’s!

Are you ready for this journey?

Now, if I was to try and guess which leg you put into your trousers when you dress what would my chances of getting the answer correct? Well 50/50.

So, if I know the answer, lets say the Left leg, then what are my chances of guessing the same question over the next 10 days? The answer is 100% (that is unless you try to manipulate, but you will not find it easy!).

And the reason its 100% is that when you first put on your trousers your brain had to go through a process of learning each individual movement, and it would have been a bit awkward at first, eventually after repeating the exercise a number of times the brain decides to, in effect, place a short cut on your home screen, and thus the activity becomes automatic.

For many of our leadership activities the same will be true, we need to practice, practice, practice until it becomes second nature!

The old style view on leadership is the carrot and stick, our view and that of many in the modern world is the emotional capital (EI) stance.

(please refer back to previous articles for a fuller explanation of what EI is; http://hyperiongrowth.com/great-leadership-are-we-born-with-it-or-can-we-develop-it/ )

Coaching your way to success!

One key skill that is vital to any leader is to be able to coach our team members to ensure we help them to maximise their own potential.

We must remember and believe that every human is like an Acorn, they have within them all they need to succeed and grow to be a tall and strong Oak tree, they, like the Acorn only need nurturing!

As Galileo Galilei said;

“You cannot teach a man anything, You can only help him discover it within himself”

Great coaches and great leaders will have high emotional capital, you can’t simply read a book or attend a course on coaching and be able to change.

What is coaching?

Well when used effectively it is one of the most powerful ways to communicate. A competent coach will raise awareness, cutting through procrastination straight to the chase.

It’s about helping an individual to move forward, helping them increase performance, a catalyst for change. The knock on effect on an organisation is increased team performance translated in to bottom line growth.

It is not a panacea for everything, as is commonly misunderstood, it is not mentoring, counselling, training or consultancy, it is not telling someone how to, it is not giving advice or providing solutions!

Delivered expertly by emotionally intelligent coaches it is an extremely powerful discipline which in the right circumstances can effect massive change in individuals and collectively, the organisations they work for.

In our next months article we will talk more about how to coach.
